Alexandre Guilmant composed eight organ sonatas. This movement is sometimes played on its own. The idea of using a cor anglais instead of a second oboe throughout the piece came from Vaughan Williams (his fifth symphony). Guilmant's phrasing and articulation have mainly been retained. Players may wish to adapt organ phrasing to their own instruments.
